Vulcan Forge Short Line
Railroad & Papillon Gardens is a combination of my long time
interest in live steam railroading and
my wifes' love of perennial gardening, butterflies and Papillons.
The railroad operates on 15" gauge track with a Shay
locomotive
and rolling stock modeled to 5" to the foot scale. A
portion of
track
winds in and out of one side of the gardens, passing through a 16 foot
long arbor then into a curved 30 foot long 'tunnel' formed by
multicolored butterfly bushes on one side of the right-of-way and 15
foot tall ornamental grasses on the other. The name Vulcan Forge is taken from our metalsmith studio of the same name. This facility is used for making everything from car grab rails, edged weapons to commissioned art pieces, for the last thirty years. Papillon is the French word for butterfly as well as a small dog breed. The gardens have an abundance of various butterflies and is also the part time habitat for our four Papillon dogs.
